Dust Devil Storyline

A shape shifter (Burke) comes from the desert in search of victims, a spirit the locals call "The Dust Devil". He prays on the lonely and the unloved, those that have already lost everything but life itself. Wendy (Field) has broken up with her husband and wanders aimlessly in her car. She picks up a stranger and begins having misgivings about picking him up when strange things begin to occur. Meanwhile a local police officer (Mokae) tracks the killer. Aided by a shaman's admonishments about witchcraft he sets off to try and stop the beast before it can complete its grisly task.

Dust Devil trivia

Originally Stanley had 'Kerry Fox (I)' (qv) in mind for the character of Wendy. The film's financiers weren't satisfied with her and the same went for Stanley's second suggestion, 'Stacey Travis (I)' (qv), who starred in Stanley's previous feature, _Hardware (1990)_ (qv). The decision to cast 'Chelsea Field' (qv) was a last-minute compromise.
Producer 'Joanne Sellar' got lost in the desert while out scouting for locations.
DIRCAMEO('Richard Stanley (I)' (qv)): When Wendy is driving to Bethany at night, she falls asleep behind the wheel and is startled by the Dust Devil, who is on the side of the road transforming into a dog. Stanley himself is under the makeup.
Due to the extremely dusty locations in Namibia, 16 motor vehicles ground to a halt during the seven week shoot.
The project had its genesis as a dream that director 'Richard Stanley (I)' (qv) had when he was a student at the Cape Town Film School. He tried unsuccessfully to realize it at the time.
