According to the DVD commentary by 'Mary Harron (I)' (qv), the film is set in 1987. This is also confirmed when Patrick is briefly seen reading Zagat's Survey: 1987. And Reagan's speech at the end of the film was given on March 4, 1987.
All of the business cards read "Vice President".
The only part of the movie that author Bret Easton Ellis didn't like was Bateman's moonwalk during Paul Allen's murder-scene.
The movie appearing on Bateman's TV while he's working out at home is _The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974)_ (qv).
When during a very early stage in preproduction 'Leonardo DiCaprio' (qv) expressed interest in playing the lead, production company Lions Gate issued a press release that DiCaprio would star in the movie. Previously attached director 'Mary Harron (I)' (qv) walked off the project, because she had not been consulted about this decision and had wanted 'Christian Bale' (qv) to play Patrick Bateman. 'Oliver Stone (I)' (qv) became involved to direct, creating ever more media frenzy, which also concentrated on the now sky-rocketing budget of the movie. When both DiCaprio (whose interest in this project had been grossly overstated) and Stone dropped the project, Harron and Bale returned to the movie.

American Psycho goofs

DATE: The TV that is shown at the end of the movie with President Reagan speaking is a late '90s model of Sony Trinitron.
GEOG: Bateman's office is supposed to be located downtown, yet the view out his window is clearly of midtown.
SYNC: When Patrick Bateman is "watching" _The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974)_ (qv) (while exercising) the screams of Sally Hardesty are inconsistent with the original soundtrack.
BOOM: In the second scene where Kimball (the detective) is interviewing Bateman, the reflection of the microphone can be seen on the CDs to the left of Bateman.
FAKE: All of the windows show views of the cityscape with the horizontal line far above normal. This signals that the views are backdrops which are set too high. Often one looks up at a character and at the same time looks down on the streets, which is impossible.
